The adoption of pathogen-resistant cultivars represents a promising solution to increase vineyard sustainability and competitiveness. The Emilia-Romagna region funded project ValorInVitis evaluated the adaptation of these new genotypes to the pedo-climatic conditions of the Colli Piacentini wine region across two seasons. The trial focused on the productive traits and the main components of resistance towards the key pathogens of the area exerted by ten disease-resistant cultivars. Specific study cases will be presented about how to integrate the new information and knowledge obtained in order to define innovative disease management strategies.

Vineyard sustainability is impaired by the negative effects on grapevine physiology and fruit ripening related to climate change. The traditional and innovative plant material available represents a relevant chance for a wine district to evolve and adapt, according to the environmental conditions. The three-year project ValorInVitis tested traditional and autochthonous cultivars, new crossings and innovative rootstocks as a source of innovation in the scenario of the Colli Piacentini wine district, whose competitiveness is currently strongly affected by warming trends. The performances of the different genotypes was evaluated together with their adaptation to different environments within the region. Finally, the genetic identity of each genotype was assessed with the most modern methods available in grapevine biotechnology.
